Burlingame rolls past Hartford to start season 3-0

Now 3-0 after a rout of Hartford, Burlingame plays third-ranked Chase County next week.

If Burlingame was looking ahead to next week’s showdown against third-ranked Chase County, it didn’t show during Friday night’s 56-6 win against Hartford. The Bearcats scored four touchdowns in each quarter, averaging more than 19 yards per play in a game that ended at halftime.

Despite facing a second-and-25 on the first series, Burlingame (3-0) wasted little time scoring, finding the end zone at the 10:41 mark of the opening quarter on Colby Middleton’s 45 yard pass to Matthew Heckman.

The lead grew to 13-0 three minutes later when Heckman added a 9-yard run and Jose Arevalo converted the point-after kick. Celebrating a birthday, Heckman scored all three times he touched the ball, finishing with 98 yards on two receptions and one carry.

Fielding a team despite having only 12 players, Hartford struggled mightily on offense, failing to pick up a first down until the second quarter. The Jaguars (0-3) had minus-1 yard in the first quarter.

The Bearcats led 21-0 after J.D. Tyson raced 45 yards for a touchdown with a little more than three minutes left in the first. Tyson connected with Timmy Roberts on the two-point conversion pass. Heckman’s third score, a 44-yard reception from Tyson, and Arevalo’s PAT pushed the advantage to 28-0.

If not for penalties, the margin might have been even worse. Burlingame had 11 for 80 yards, more than Hartford’s final total yardage on offense.

Nonetheless, the Bearcats added touchdowns from Middleton on a 12-yard run, Winters on a 9-yard jaunt, Tyson on a 4-yard keeper and Jace DeWitt on a 38-yard rumble. Arevalo hit four PAT kicks.

Hartford’s lone touchdown came on a 28-yard run by Tysin Bulson.

Burlingame had 306 yards on just 16 plays. Middleton had 119 yards (64 rushing, 55 passing), Tyson 98 yards (49 rushing and passing), Heckman 98 yards, including 89 receiving, and Winters 52 yards (42 rushing, 10 receiving).

The Bearcats, who have outscored their opponents 156-12 this season, begin district play Friday at Chase County.
